A Blog Recycled ~ Jane Austen

I know it's been ages since I last posted a blog. I've been busy, with family things, writing, and other stuff. To top it all off, I'm recycling blogs. Why? Because in my usual fashion, I get so caught up in the moment, that I don't stop to think about the work load I'm putting on myself. Yes, I'm talking about all those extra blogs I had going there for a while. You will see they are no longer on my navigating bar. That's right I've put them to bed.

So back to my recycling. Even if I do say so myself, I did have some good ideas for posts. Because I'm having trouble posting here at the moment with all that is still going on in my life, I'm recycling the posts from my now defunct blogs. First up is my look into famous or influential women in history. Who better for me to start with than Jane Austen?

Jane Austen, born December 16th, 1775 at Stevenson, Hampshire England, the seventh of eight children, and the second daughter. Jane’s life was not unlike that of many of her heroines, raised in a family on medium income, where the daughters would need to marry into money, as there was little to be bestowed upon them when their father’s died.

Jane’s father Rev. George Austen the local rector at Stevenson and his wife Cassandra (nee Leigh) by all accounts had a loving marriage. Jane enjoyed reading, learnt to draw and play the piano (although rather poorly. Sound like anyone?) 

  

 

From many of Jane’s letters to her beloved sister Cassandra, Jane came across as a girl/woman who enjoyed the company and affection of many who attended the social gathering of the time.


In one letter she writes about a mutual flirtation with Thomas Lefroy. Thomas is believed to have been Jane’s great love interest, but because he had no money of his own and the fact Jane, herself had no money coming her way, they did not pursue this relationship.

Jane write to Cassandra saying:

"Tell Mary that I make over Mr. Heartley and all his estate to her for her sole use and benefit in future, and not only him, but all my other admirers into the bargain wherever she can find them, even the kiss which C. Powlett wanted to give me, as I mean to confine myself in future to Mr. Tom Lefroy, for whom I do not care sixpence. Assure her also, as a last and indisputable proof of Warren's indifference to me, that he actually drew that gentleman's picture for me, and delivered it to me without a sigh.

Friday. -- At length the day is come on which I am to flirt my last with Tom Lefroy, and when you receive this it will be over. My tears flow at the melancholy idea."

Now that is just too sad.



 

Was this were Jane draw her inspiration for her novels? Did she cast the spiteful Mrs. Mitford as one of her characters? Mrs. Mitford’s description of Jane as "the prettiest, silliest, most affected, husband-hunting butterfly she ever remembers" sounds somewhat like Lady Catherine De Bourgh.

When Jane died 18th July 1817 at the age of 41, she life behind a legacy of wonderful novels written by a woman of great imagination and humour.

 

The inscription on Jane’s grave at Winchester Cathedral:

                                  In memory of


                               JANE AUSTEN,

                     youngest daughter of the late

                       Revd. GEORGE AUSTEN,

             formerly Rector of Steventon in this County.

            She departed this Life on the 18th July 1817,

              aged 41, after a long illness supported with

               the patience and the hopes of a Christian.

                    The benevolence of her heart,

              the sweetness of her temper, and

            he extraordinary endowments of her mind

          obtained the regard of all who knew her, and

          the warmest love of her intimate connections.

          Their grief is in proportion to their affection

           they know their loss to be irreparable,

        but in the deepest affliction they are consoled

       by a firm though humble hope that her charity,

          devotion, faith and purity have rendered

          her soul acceptable in the sight of her

                          REDEEMER.




Jane’s novels continue to fascinate readers the world over and with many either made into mini-series for television or movies, the interest in Jane’s work is sure to continue to grow.

Another Crazy Month

SO you remember the idiot who booked into 3 courses while camping? Yes, well she’s back. This month I’m doing 50k in 30 Days with my RWAustralia buddies, I’ve pledged to write 50k and edit 80k, not too hard you would think right? Well that would be the case had I not also signed up for another Margie Lawson’s course ‘Writing Body Language and Dialogue Cues’, as always with Margie’s courses ‘FANTASTIC’. My problem is working out which manuscript to work on first.

Of course that would be way too easy for me, so I’ve also signed up ‘Power of the Right Question’ with Susan Meier, Make a Scene with June Diehl, Show Don’t Tell with Flo Fitzpatrick, and Heroine’s Journey: Adapting Four-Structure to the Character-Driven Story all with Savvy Authors. I LOVE Savvy Authors, so many cool and fantastic courses.

Then just to mix it up a little, I’m checking on my son and daughter-in-laws house while they are away touring Europe. Three days a week, I drive the 45 minutes to their house, collect the mail, check the house and drive home, in all it takes me about two to two and a half hours.

Thinking about this now, it may not have been a good idea to take on so many projects. But, than I’ve never been very good with organising my time. Which is why no housework is getting done around here, oh that’s right it very rarely gets done anyway. I need a genie, one that will give me heaps of great tasting low fat chocolate (because I'm on a diet) and who will do all my housework. LOL.

Crazy Is As Crazy Does

Who in their right mind books into doing a workshop when they are going to be camping in the back of a horse truck for almost a week? Probably the same idiot that booked into three workshops the same week she was going to be camping in the back of said horse truck. Yes, that would be me! Actually I have a whole month of workshops lined up for May.

I'm doing another Margie Lawson course this month, Deep Editing: The EDITS System, Rhetorical Devices, and More. It is a follow on from Empowering Character's Emothions, I'm learning so much. I may even learn to like the editing process. Lecture One and I can already see changes in the way I'm approching editing and where my WIPS need the most work. COOL!!! I am going to be very Margiezied by the end of the month.

I also did a four day workshop with Savvy Authors - Defining Erotica - Primer for Authors of all Genres. Now that was an interesting few days. I'm sure CC is going to be very pleased I took part in that workshop.

Tomorrow, that being Saturday - I'm doing another two, one day workshops with Coyote Con: Brainstorming the Future of the Novel and Stepping Lightly: Historical Fiction. Of course both of these workshops have a good chance of clashing with Hubby's show events. The workshops are held in chat rooms. All I can hope is that the Workshop and Show Gods are going to be nice and let all fall into place.

Sunday I have another two workshops with Coyote Con, these workshops run every Friday Saturday and Sunday during May (or in my case Saturday, Sunday and Monday). Get this, my first workshop for Sunday Search and Destroy: Passive Verbs, starts at 4am (that's Aussie time). Then at 6am I have Settings: The Medieval Workd. At least these are before the show starts on Sunday; of course I also have to drive home later in the day. I think I may need an early night Saturday night.

Monday I have: Artificial Interigence and Sexuality, Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Fiction and Writing the Series Character, with Coyote Con.

Tuesday I start another two, month long workshops. With Savvy Authors I'm doing: Todd Stone Presents: Character(s) and Conflict - More is More and More is Better, and with OCCRWA I'm doing a workshop with Terry Blain - Another Time Another Place.

As you can see I really an CRAZY!!!!!

A Writing & Life Update

As you know, I am doing Margie Lawson’s Empowering Character’s Emotions. Today I have spent the day printing out all my finished and partially finished manuscripts. Yes, it has taken me all day, well on and off getting things ready for hubby to go away. Food to cook, clothes to iron etc.
The one thing I am looking forward to is seeing how my writing has changed, because some of these manuscripts I wrote a few years back. Yes, I know I am slack for not editing them before now. Well I did do some editing, but that was before I knew what I was supposed to do, not that I know it all now.

Margie’s course is still going well, except that I am a bit behind on my assignments.

I had a few days out with my Mum last week, she had a fall at the nursing home, and cut her let pretty bad, today we found out she also broke one of her toes. It is hard to watch her at the moment, she is very scared, cannot understand what is happening to her. She knows it is because of the Huntington’s, does not understand why she cannot control things better. All we can do is hold her hand and be there for her. Life sucks sometimes.

Okay enough whinging for me, back to my editing, first I have to make hubby a cup of tea, because I said I would. LOL.

Working with Margie

Empowering Characters’ Emotions with Margie Lawson is going well. Of course there are gaping holes in my writing, too much yellow highlight, not enough body language. Too much tell, no enough showing.

The joys of being an aspiring author, I have no idea why I thought the writing was the easy part. LOL. On a bright note, I am really enjoying Margie’s course and think I’ll do the Deep Editing: The EDITS System, Rhetorical Devices, and More in May. I can see a lot of work in front of me as I rework my way through my WIPs I’ve already started to edit.



I’ve had to have a rethink of my Regency romance, the English law pertaining to inheritance due to women. Nothing like having your great idea derailed. With the help for the RWAus Historical loop girls and some research, I think I may have an answer to my heroine’s dilemma, however I will have to do some rewriting when it comes to my subplot. At least words are being added to ‘Lady Mounthall’s Lover’, unlike ‘Having Her Best Friend’s Baby’.

It’s not that Lexie and James’ story wasn’t working, it is more a case of hours in the day. I’m editing one complete novel, as well as writing and editing another as I go. I’m testing out my CP, Heather Brown’s, idea of writing one day and editing the next, to see if that will help when I come to the end of the novel.

I’m still reading Paula Roe’s blog each week, to stay on top of her ‘A Novel in 3 Months’, as I’m using some of her writing techniques with ‘Lady Mounthall’s Lover’, it is all good. Of course, I am still finding out things about my characters, especially my Hero, The Duke of Chesterfield. I discovered the other day he has alternate motives to pursue heroine, Lady Josephine Mounthall.

Margie Lawson - Empowering Character's Emotions & Other Things

I am starting Margie Lawson’s ‘Empowering Character’s Emotions’ today, (well later tonight). I’m really looking forward to this course and hoping to be able to put the needed emotion into my characters and novels. There are a few Aussies doing the course with me, Diane Curran (who was the one to give me the push to the course on line), Suzanne Brandyn (Suz is one of my fellow NewMait members), Natalie Hatch, Shayne Collier (Shayne is a fellow Bootcamper), Chris Weston, Louise Ousby and Lesley Smith, I think that’s all of us so far.

Diane has set up a separate loop for us to be able to discuss the course between us, as well as talk about homework set down by Margie.

On the writing front, I’m moving forward slowly. I’m enjoying Paula Roe’s ‘A Novel in 3 Months’ and have managed to get myself into some form of routine. Writing a plan for each scene before I start writing each day is helping, so hopefully by the time I’m finished the editing won’t take too long in future.

‘Having Her Best Friend’s Baby’ is delivering a few surprises, like the parents from hell for my poor heroine. No wonder Lexie has issues. As for my hero, well he has enough on his plate trying to avoid his new step-mummy who has her sights set on him (this I did not see coming).
With my Regency romance, I’m really enjoying this one. Except for the fact that the heroine has changed her name three times LOL. H/H have had their first meeting and she is not impressed, he on the other hand has already started to work out ways to get the newly widowed Lady Mounthall into his bed.

Writing by Mini Plotting

As you know I’m following Paula Roe’s, ‘A Novel in 3 Months’, you may also know that I’m a pantser, not a plotter. I may however have come across a way to be both. Twice a week Paula posts the steps she takes in getting her novel plotted and ready for writing. I’m taking those steps as well, it’s just that I’m writing as I’m plotting. Yes, so as not to upset my temperamental characters, each morning I plot (or draft) what I want to happen that day in the scenes I’m writing. So far, it’s working, I’ve had no hissy fits where my characters stop talking or just go off on a tangent of their own desire. I’m a happy girl.

I’m also a girl who is working on two novels, a contemporary and an historical, as well as editing for CC. I’ve split my days into three parts. In the morning I’m working on the historical, the aim is to complete one scene a day. The lengths vary so this is affecting my word count each day.

Did I mention I’m doing BIAW with the RWAus Historical loop? Well I am, you know what I’m like with challenges. Okay back to my daily routine.

After spending a couple of hours on my historical, I then move onto editing. I’m aiming for five pages a day. Seeing, as it is a novella of around 13,000 words, I’m hoping to have this finished by the end of the challenge. I’m also hoping to increase the word count to about 15k.

After lunch and as long as I’ve reached my five pages of editing, I move on to my contemporary ‘Having Her Best Friend’s Baby’. All of this has been running very smoothly, until today! Today I’ve done nothing on any of my projects. Today, I’ve worked on blogs. This blog, my Historical Blog, the RWAus Blog for ‘Cruisin’ the Blog’ and this week’s ‘Bookshelf Saturday’. Tonight, I need to sort out my office so I have somewhere for a friend who is coming to stay for a night or two. So no writing for me today.

Tomorrow is another day, and with any luck, I’ll be able to make up for my slackness today.
