At Your Service - 19th Century Housemaid

Chamber Maids
The chamber maid was responsible for cleaning  and maintaining the bedrooms
She would earn twenty pounds ($2,100) per year.

Parlour Maids
The parlour maid was responsible for cleaning and maintaining the sitting rooms, drawing rooms, etc. of the house. She would earn twenty pounds ($2,100) per year.

House Maid
General was responsible for cleaning and maintaining any areas not covered by the chamber and parlour maids worker. Earned sixteen pounds ($1,700) a year.

 Between Maid
Worked in either the house or the kitchen as needed. She would earn fifteen pounds ($1,600) a year.


Under Cook
The under cook was an apprentice to the cook. She/he prepares meals for the staff and assisted the cook for large banquets. Earned fifteen pounds ($1,600) per year.

Kitchen Maid
The kitchen maid assists in kitchen work. She earned fifteen pounds ($1,600) a year.

Scullery Maid
Scullery maids worked in the kitchen, assisting the kitchen maids and the cook.
They were in charge of scrubbing pots and pans, and cleaning dishes and utensils after each meal of the day, as well as afternoon and evening tea. She earned thirteen pounds ($1,300) per year.

Laundry Maid

The laundry maid’s responsibility  were – washing and ironing. She would earn thirteen pounds ($1,300) a year.
