Look Who's Talking ~ Erin Moira O’Hara

Thank you for taking part in my ‘Look Who’s Talking’.

Thanks, Sandie

If you could live anywhere in the world other than Australia where would it be and why?

In a villa on an Island off Italy, or in a villa beside one of the lakes in the north of Italy, or on a vineyard in the Tuscan hills. Notice a common thread here? I adore Italy, the people, the wine, the food, the atmosphere, everything.

LOL Erin, why am I not surprised.

Where do you get your inspiration from to write?

Absolutely everywhere. Songs on the radio, the news or articles in the paper. Conversation I’m involved in, an experience I’ve had or someone I know has told me about. Travel brochures. It could be anything.

You certainly have a wide range there.

A fairy godmother has come to visit and she is willing to turn one of your heroes into a human. Who would you pick?

I love all my heroes. Perhaps my sexy knight in the Knight of Castle Kildare or the Boss in my Heroes of Steele Series. He has a hidden sense of humour that breaks out every now and then. Plus he’s a real alpha male and takes no prisoners. He’s gutsy, sexy and not the least bit interested in settling down, until he meets the one woman he can’t have. Hmm, yes I want him. I might add here that I mould all my heroes on my husband. He’s still the love of my life and the sexiest man I’ve ever met.

A genie will grant you three wishes. What would they be?

I wish for an end to human trafficking and slave labour throughout the world.
I wish for a fabulous contract with a publishing house that wants to publish me in both digital and print format for everything I write.
I wish for more time to write, which would probably involve a lotto win.

I agree with the first one Erin, and I know with research you’ve been doing for your latest MS it would only add to your awareness of the problem.

What is your current work-in-progress?

The second book in my Heroes of Steel Series. “In Pursuit of Evil. This time I’m tackling people trafficking and slave labour. Of course my hero will go in and save the woman he has become infatuated with. Big problem, she’s the wife and daughter-in-law of two very dangerous men who want her dead as she plans to identify their network of traffickers. Of course it goes without saying that my leading hero and heroine will fall in love, beat the bad guys and save the day.
I can’t wait to read the second novel Erin, book/ms is fantastic.

Would you like to share an extract?

Sure, I would love to but I’ve had to change my hero and heroin’s names as I’m in a couple of competitions associated with the first book of this series.

A movement on the street caught Claire’s eye. Pulling the curtain aside, she leaned against the cold glass and squinted. Was there someone down there? Her pulse quickened. What if it was her husband’s men and they’d come to silence her and take Ella? Fear clutched her stomach. Stop it. The police officers downstairs are vigilant and armed. They won’t let anyone in and no one knows we’re here.
A figure ran from behind a white sedan, crossed the street and ducked behind a silver station wagon. For a brief moment he was caught in the light of the street lamp. Claire swallowed. An Asian man, that’s not a good sign.
Another figure emerged from behind the white sedan and sprinted across the street. This one was taller, Caucasian and held a gun.
“Shit.” Claire dropped the curtain and ran to the chair, picked up the baby sling and pulled it over her head. She may be jumping to conclusions, but better safe than sorry. She wrapped her sleeping angel in a bunny rug and gently placed her in the sling then hurried from the bedroom, along the hall and down the stairs.
Her two minders were sitting at the kitchen bench playing cards. They both reached for their guns as Claire ran through the doorway.
“What is it?” asked Brian coming to his feet.
“I just saw two men ducking behind cars. One has a gun.”
“Get upstairs,” ordered Steve leaping off his stool. He turned to Brian. I’ll ring the boss then check the back, you keep an eye on the front.” He glanced at Claire. “Move!”
“Okay, I’m going.”
As the two officers disappeared in separate directions, Claire’s gaze fell on the portable phone lying on the bench. She swiped it up and ran out of the kitchen, cushioning Ella as she leapt up the stairs. Once in her room, Claire opened her locket and pulled out the scrap of paper with a mobile number scrawled across it. She keyed it into the phone then closed her eyes and drew a shaky breath. “Please be there.” On the third ring a deep familiar voice answered.
“Jack speaking.”
“It’s me, Claire. I’m sorry to ring so late but I think I’m in trouble.”
“Claire! What’s happening?”
“I saw two men ducking behind cars and one has a gun. I told the police officers and they’re checking it out now but I’m scared. No one is supposed to know where I am.”
“Can you describe the men?”
“Um, one was short and Asian looking. I didn’t get a good look at the other one.”
“All right, I’m on my way. Take the baby and go up to the attic.”
Claire stepped toward the door. “Wait, how do you know there’s an attic?”
“We traced the rego plates you gave your mum then Aaron and I did a little reconnaissance. You’re in a rendered terrace with a closed in verandah, right?”
“Yes.” Claire stepped into the hall as glass shattered downstairs. “Jack, someone just smashed a window and I can hear people coughing.”
“Fuck, they must have thrown in tear gas. Hurry.”
Claire looked up. “I see the trapdoor but...” She stretched up. “I can’t reach it.”
“Get a chair or a thick book or anything, quick.” His breathing sounded heavy as if he was running. She heard him call out to Aaron.
With her heart in her mouth, Claire pushed the nearest door open. Beads of sweat broke out on her forehead as her gaze searched the bathroom. “There’s a bath stool.”
“Good, use it, but make sure you take it with you into the attic. We’re not far away.”
She could hear an engine starting through the phone. Placing the stool under the trapdoor, Claire climbed onto it and reached for a metal ring. “Got it.” She pulled and a long door lowered revealing a sliding ladder. Stepping off the stool, she pulled it aside and slid the ladder down. Her hands felt clammy.
Another window smashed. “Shit, Jack, will this nightmare ever stop?”
“I believe in you, Claire. Get up the ladder then pull the trap door shut.”
Squealing wheels sounded in her ear. “Jack, are you okay?”
“Christ, that was close.” She heard him exhale. “I nearly took out bus. Don’t worry about my driving skills, just hurry.”
Tucking the phone in the sling, Claire picked up the stool, grabbed the rail with her spare hand and scrambled up the rungs. Ella kept bumping against her chest, but mercifully she remained asleep.
Gunshots sounded downstairs. They’re inside.
She set the stool down, wiped her hands on the sling and hauled on the pulley cord. The ladder retracted bringing the door up with it. Claire let out a shaky breath and snatched up the phone. “Jack, I’m up and the door’s shut.
“Good. Now hang up and find somewhere to hide. I’ll alert the rest of the team and we’ll be there as fast as we can.”
“Okay.” She hit the end call button and turned around. Her gaze skimmed the large empty attic and her heart plummeted like a rock. The streetlight outside cast a long beam through the small window at the front illuminating every inch of the room. “What now?”
Baby noises came from within the sling. Claire moved the blanket to find Ella’s eyes wide open. She cooed when she saw Claire.
“Oh my darling, we need to stay really quiet.”
Running feet and doors crashing open sounded below her. They’re searching for us. Claire’s gaze fell on the attic window. It’s that or stay here and die, and I’ll be damned if I’m giving up that easy. She picked up the stool and tiptoe across to the window, relieved to discover it wasn’t nailed shut. Unlatching it, Claire leaned back as the window swung in, bringing a cold breeze and the drizzling rain with it. Ignoring the stinging bite, she squirmed through and placed her bare feet on the coarse wet roof-tiles.
They creaked.
Holding Ella tightly, Claire gingerly put one foot in front of the other, edging along the slippery roof toward a chimney about ten metres away. She could see lights on in the house opposite and hear voices on the street below, but from her position she didn’t dare call out. Attracting attention was the last thing she wanted. I’ll hide behind that chimney and wait for Jack. That’s a good plan.
Below someone shouted then a couple of gunshots rang out and people began screaming. Claire glanced down on the street and stubbed her toe. She gasped, hobbled onto a loose tile and her feet shot from under her sending her crashing onto her backside and knocking the breath out of her. Bloody hell, that hurt. Little sobs came from within the folds of the sling. “Shush, honey, it’s okay. Mummy just lost her balance. I’ve got you.” Claire pulled Ella closer and patted her back. “Please don’t cry, sweetie.”
Clanging sounded from inside the roof. Shit, they’re coming up the ladder. Clair scrambled to her knees and crawled toward the chimney, ignoring her sore butt and the rough tiles on her bare knees.
Ella quieted with just the occasional hiccup. Another gunshot rang out and the ridge capping on the peak of the roof exploded. Claire sent a desperate glance to the street and her lungs seized. A man stood in the middle of the road pointing a gun up at her.
“Oh my God.” She crouched lower and crawled faster as another bullet slammed into tiles below her. It shattered into smithereens sending small shards biting into her body. “Jack, hurry.”

Great extract Erin. I so love this story.

Thank you for your time.
Thanks, Sandie. I enjoyed your questions.

Look Who's Talking - Suzi Love

Today I am joined by talented Historical Romance author Suzi Love. Suzi thank you for taking part in my ‘Look Who’s Talking’ post.

A bit about Suzi:
Suzi lives in the northern state of Queensland, known for sunshine and golden beaches.
She has also lived in outback Australia and in two South Pacific countries.
She has been lucky enough to travel through lots of other countries, inspired the exotic settings for her books.

1.      What couldn’t you live without?
a)      Computer
b)      Mobile phone
c)      Your car
My pink laptop has become my premiere fashion accessory ( according to my family) because it is always with me : under my arm, on my lap, in the car, on planes etc.
Yes my laptop is my first choice followed very closely by my car. (But only so I can visit my mum).

2. If you could live anywhere in the world other than Australia where would it be and why?

I’d love to go back to Vanuatu and live there again. Gorgeous weather ( except for the cyclones of course) Because I love the beaches, the relaxed way of life, and the friendly people.
Vanuatu sounds so lovely, very peaceful. My youngest sister lived there for a while.

3.  Whom do you admire most past or present? Why?

I’ve always thought Walt Disney was one of the most imaginative and awe-inspiring men on our planet. His cartoons, shows, and movies give so many people so much fun and as for the Disney theme parks? Awesome! Best places ever for having fun.

Walt Disney was an inspiration to many people I think Suzi. He had great insight back in his day I think. I know I loved watching the ‘Mickey Mouse Club’ when I was a kid.

4. A genie will grant you three wishes. What would they be?

To find an explanation for why people get Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue so that these crippling illnesses can be prevented in the future.
To send me to live with Keanu Reeves and be his ‘personal assistant’.
Yum Keanu Reeves, who wouldn’t like to be his personal assistant. It would be wonderful to be able to find about many of the debilitating illnesses. My mum had Huntington’s so I’d love to find a cure for that. I’m lucky in that I don’t carry the gene so my children and grandchildren won’t suffer from it.

5. Do you have a new release coming out soon or have you just released a novel?

Scenting Scandal has just launched and it’s the second in my Scandalous Siblings Series. Laura and Richard get their own book and have loads of fun even while scandalizing The Beau Monde in London.

Would you like to share an extract?

“Half an hour at most until we can end this farce. Then we’ll be free to bid each other a far-from-fond farewell.”
The Earl snorted, the indelicate sound contrasting with the refined air he presented this morning in his long charcoal frock coat with tailored sleeves displaying decorative gold buttons. A gold-threaded gray vest fitted snugly underneath, while a gold bar sporting an enormous topaz winked from the elaborate folds of his thrice-about neckcloth.
Laura twisted her neck a little more and looked lower. Immaculate trousers – with the newer style front fastening instead of a buttoned-over flap – covered an acre of legs and finished at blindingly-polished walking boots.
Living up to her family title of Miss Inquisitive, she moved her gaze higher again and back to his thigh’s evident musculature, honed from time spent on horseback. The mechanics, and easy access, of one row of buttons down the simplified closing on his trousers fascinated her, purely from a scientific point of view.
Botheration. The air had warmed all of a sudden. She lifted her ivory and lace fan. Even waving the fragile creation rapidly back and forth didn’t dispel her flush. Not blush, as she’d never admit to such a state. Dealing with the Earl might be a hardship, but she and her sisters had never found it taxing to peruse the Earl’s decidedly-masculine physique. She risked one more peek. No, not difficult at all. When her appraisal reached his face, she saw a wide smile and a display of even white teeth, and she smiled in return.
“Uh, uh,” he said, wagging a finger. “You misunderstand the reasons for my happier expression. Unlike you, I’m looking forward to the next three months and the chance to study your fiscal strategies. I’d like to compare my investing skills to those of your astute sister’s.”
His mouth widened into a roguish grin. “I’m also flattered by your scrutiny of my anatomy and amused by your blush, especially after your studies into animal reproduction.”
Her free hand flew to her cheek and her heavy reticule knocked her arm. “I never blush.” To have him observe her ogle him was embarrassing and gave her another reason to be irritated by his company, petty though her reasons might be. She tugged, but her hand was imprisoned under his. With her nose raised a fraction, she said, “For the sake of propriety, I was ensuring your garments were intact. You’ve a reputation for disappearing into dark corners and re-emerging with your clothing askew. As though hasty hands ripped your garments from your body.”
“Tut, tut, my pet. Has jealousy driven you to spying?”
“Jealousy? Over the class of females you consort with? I was reassuring myself your clothing was intact for the sake of my elderly aunt. The entire congregation watched that woman, the Countess, beckon you to the back of the church. Heaven knows what you were doing while the bride and groom were signing the register.”
Winchester chuckled, long and low. “I doubt even my sullied reputation could support the story that I dragged the Countess into a shadowy niche for a quick tumble. At least, not with my sisters watching me like hawks.” He dipped his head closer. “I may excel at dispensing pleasure, but I like more than a few minutes to enjoy a rendezvous.”
She forced herself to stand motionless, to not react to his latest coarse taunt. “I’ve no interest,” she said, between calming breaths, “in knowing any details of how you entertain–”

Suzi, what a fantastic extract. I can see these are going to be great together.

I’d love to donate Books 1 and 2 in the Scandalous Siblings Series, because even though Scenting Scandal is a standalone historical romance, I think it’s more fun to read a series from the start.

Look Who's Talking - Iris Blobel

It is my pleasure to welcome Iris Blobel to my blog today.

Iris thank you for taking part in my ‘Look Who’s Talking’ blog.

Thank you for the opportunity.

Let's hit the questions:
1. Hugh Jackman is coming to dinner, what do you cook?
a) Lamb roast dinner
b) Fish and chips
c) Find out what Hugh’s favourite meal is and cook that.

Well… I’ve failed my Australian citizenship application because I don’t like lamb. Fish and chips are on my “no no list” to eat, because I’m histamine intolerant. So I’d really go for something I could eat as well without falling victim to any of the various symptoms – wouldn’t like to end up with a massive migraine, while Hugh is in the house. Imagine the embarrassment! But there’re some very nice recipes out there. I’m sure I’d be able to come up with something he’d like.

I know what you mean Iris. Of course, it would be no hardship having Hugh sitting by my bed placing a cold compress to my forehead every so often.

2.  If you could live anywhere in the world other than Australia, where would it be and why?

Canada!
I met my husband in Canada and before we had children, we always thought about taking LWOP for a year and live over there. I know it’s cold, but just so beautiful and diverse, the mountains and the sea. And the wildlife… but I think that part would mostly be scary!

Canada does sound wonderful. My husband has always said he’d like to go there for a visit. I’d love to live in England, mostly for the castles and the history. Of course I write historical romance so it would be right up my alley.

3.  The world is coming to an end, what are you most proud of achieving?
Having my girls and raising them (without going insane), trying to prepare them for an ever-changing world, without losing their sense of humour and generous character.

I have to agree with you there Iris, my kids would have to be my proudest achievement. Just admiring the people they have become and how they are now raising their children.

4.  A fairy godmother has come to visit and she is willing to turn one of your heroes into a human. Who would you pick?

Daniel from “Sweet Dreams, Miss England”. Oh my… yes, please! Daniel’s Irish, he’s charming, clever and… *sighs*… yes, please, fairy godmother, let it be Daniel!

Oh, he does sound like a dream.

5.  Do you have a new release coming out soon or have you just released a novel?

Yes, “More Beginnings” was released late January. It’s the second book in the Beginnings series, which is set in Hobart (Tasmania) telling the story of two sisters who’ve inherited a house from a stranger. I’ve really fallen in love with the Levesque girl and I’m so close finishing the 3rd book and have a (hopefully!) great idea for number four J

That sounds like an interesting series Iris.

Mia let out a mighty sigh. She had joined Zach at the front porch and sat next to him on the swing. Enjoying a cool drink, he asked her to grab a soft drink from the fridge as well. It was a warm summer day, and the air showed no sign of cooling down. A lot of people in Hobart were tired and weary of the unusual hot spell for the very southern Australian city.

With another hefty sigh, Mia raked through her long, blond hair and focused into the distance.

"Honestly, Zach, she’s a dragon. I’m sure she does that on purpose. She doesn’t like me. She thinks I’m spoilt."

The dragon was Miss Peterson, Mia’s high school English teacher. Mia liked school and enjoyed her classes. English wasn’t her worst subject, but it certainly was the toughest, with Miss Peterson piling on homework one after the other.
Zach sipped on his drink. "Hey, pumpkin, settle down. What is that supposed to mean ‘you’re spoilt’?"

She shrugged. "You know!"

His eyebrows shot up. "Actually I don’t know! Isn’t she Sophie’s good friend?"

Another shrug. "Kinda, I s’pose. They used to do the boxing stuff together, and since Soph’s carrying a baby, they go and enjoy cake instead."

Ignoring his laugh and the subject, she went inside and helped herself to cold lemonade. She opened the can with a simple click and took a long sip. "Man, it’s hot."

Zach seemed to ponder on that thought just like Mia, when she suddenly said, "You need to cut the grass, Zach."

He almost spilled the drink. "Good grief, thanks, honey." There wasn’t much yard in front of Zach’s house. A flagstone path crossed the patch of lawn, and he’d kept the rest of the garden as low maintenance as possible. But he loved sitting on the front porch, watching the world go by.

He placed his arm around her and drew her in a bit closer. "Have you talked to Soph about your teacher?"

She nodded. "Yes. Her reply was that for most fourteen-year-old girls all the teachers seem like dragons. She remembers her science teacher who gave her a hard time. She blames it on my hormones because she thinks," Mia snorted and then continued, "Miss Peterson is a really nice person."

He chuckled, which earned him a momentary glare from Mia.

Zach shrugged his left shoulder. "I s’pose she has a point."

Rolling her eyes, she moved away from him again. "Too hot for sentiments like that."

He laughed. She had come a long way from when he had first met her. That was six years earlier, and she had been only eight. Eight years old with already enough character for three teenagers combined. But he’d liked her from more or less their first meeting on. He had been helping the girls find some stuff in their attic when he had mistaken her for Sophie’s daughter. With hands on hips she’d said to him, "Do I look like her daughter? I mean, seriously." She had the genes to become a pretty girl and she was heading that way in big steps. The stylish haircut, a slight touch of make-up to emphasise her grey-green eyes, and always dressed in the latest fashion to compliment her slim figure. And she did have her heart in the right place.

"You’ll meet her tomorrow when you drop me off at the school sports."

Eyes wide open, he turned to look at her. "I will?"

"Oh man, didn’t Sophie tell you?"

"Apparently not. Or she might have." He scratched the back of his head. "I guess she probably left a note on my calendar."

"You’ll take me, won’t you?"

He gave a small nod. "Yup."

Zach lived across the road from Sophie and Mia Levesque. The sisters had moved into Sixty-Four Chestnut Avenue six years earlier. He had shared a hot kiss with Sophie, but in the end it was Mark she’d fallen in love with.

"Will what’s-his-name be there?"

Mia rolled her eyes. "Josh. Yes he will. Remember he’s in my class."

He chuckled. "Pumpkin, just because what’s-his-name is in your class ain’t mean he’s participating in a sports day."

"Doesn’t mean."

"Beg yours?"
She took a deep breath. "It’s doesn’t mean and not ain’t. You know it drives Soph mad when you use the American lingo."

He turned to look at her. "I honestly have no idea how I’ve survived the last few years with you guys across the road."

Checking the time, she stood. "Thanks for the drink." She leaned forward to give him a kiss on the cheek. "Eight o’clock tomorrow morning?"

Zach nodded. "Does your dragon spit fire?"

With her hands on her hips, she replied, "You’re not taking me seriously, are you?"

"I am!"

She tilted her head slightly. "Let me see," she paused for effect. "With your green eyes, athletic body, husky voice, blond hair, which, by the way, is in serious need of a trim, ... hmm... she might like you. But then again, your job as an escort might disturb her."
Shaking his head, he stood and took her empty can of lemonade. "Instead of giving me a hard time with my lingo, Sophie should keep an eye on the books you read. All that romance stuff is making you silly in the head. Husky voice." He laughed and went into the house.

"At eight?" she screamed after him.

"Yeah, I’ll be there."
